New Video: Cathedral Parish Welcome

This is a nice green-screen video we did with a Parish about six blocks away from our studio. We wanted a light and bright feel for the interviews so we decided to go with a green-screen and then to replace the background in post. We started with just white but with one of our angles being wide, and showing the subject’s whole body, it didn’t look right. I ended up creating a digital cyc wall in After Effects and using digital lighting to give some depth to the background. Then I manually added shadows. The end result was a nice and bright background that blended well with our subjects.

Here’s a link to the video in our portfolio.

Cupcakery is fun

Ryan posted this on his blog and we wanted to share:

My daughters were in a photo shoot put on by Three Cheers Creative. John’s (Backflip Films partner) son Rowan was also in the shoot. Being filmmakers, we decided to bring our video equipment along and shoot the shoot. The cupcakery was very tight, especially when you add 9 adults and 5 kids into the entrance, so filming was interesting. We ended up with enough good footage to put together a short video.

Special thanks to Chris Ballew aka Caspar Babypants for letting us use his song ‘Ramshackle’ to provide the perfect ambiance for the piece. Best kid music ever: http://babypantsmusic.com/

Backflip Films’ second generation (Ryan’s daughters and John’s son) were in a photoshoot for Three Cheers Creative. We couldn’t pass up the opportunity so we brought our camera along and filmed it. We ended up with just enough footage to fit into a short video.

A Day in the Life at Assumption High School

Students, staff, and parents share the aspects of Assumption High School that make it “the place to be!”

Footage and interviews were filmed in several trips over the spring and fall in order to capture the varying seasons and activities that take place during the school year.

Wisconsin Farmers Union – Renewable Energy Tour

We had the pleasure of accompanying the Wisconsin Farmer’s Union on the 2011 Renewable Energy tour earlier this summer. This video was produced to summarize the trip around southwestern Wisconsin and to inspire farmers and policy makers all across the state to take another look at renewable energy.

Riding around southwestern Wisconsin on a bio-diesel school bus with no air-conditioning in 100 degree weather proved to be quite the test for our camera. The Canon 5D mark ii passed the test with flying colors!

Promo video for St. Paul’s Catholic Center

This video was produced for St. Paul’s University Catholic Center on the University of Wisconsin – Madison campus.  It shares the personal stories of students past and present in order to tell an emotional story.  This was shot entirely in downtown Madison, at St. Paul’s and around the campus.

Madison Children’s Museum 2011

We recently got the chance to help Madison Children’s Museum celebrate it’s 1st birthday at it’s new location in downtown Madison, WI. This video was produced for MCM’s Wonderball Black-tie event on August 6th. The piece highlights popular exhibits and areas in the museum, explains the positive impact on the surrounding community, and addresses the need for continued support to keep the museum accessible for all who would like to visit.

We would like to visit! You can bet that Ryan and I will be visiting the museum with our families the first chance we get. If the video didn’t convince you, It sure it convinced us.

2011 Demo Reel

This is our freshly minted demo reel. When assessing our marketing and advertising we realized our demo was in desperate need of an update.

Everything on our demo was shot and edited by us. We’ve had so many great projects to include but we wanted to keep it short.  If a company can’t hook you in the first minute of their reel then maybe they’re not a company you want to work with ;)

This is actually a shorter version. We’ll have a longer version once the music is reworked.  Scenes from: 1934, Missing, Haiti Music Video, Wide Awake Conference Videos, Flatt Cola spot.

Haiti Music Video

This music video is in remembrance of the earthquake in Haiti one year ago. To all the victims, ‘You are not alone.’

The video was shot on our canon XHA1 with a set of nikon prime lenses (35, 50 and 80).  John directed/edited, Ryan was the cinematographer and Aaron pa’ed.

Aaron Thompson is a local Catholic artist who wrote this song shortly after the earthquake in Haiti. Check him out at: www.aaronthompsonmusic.com.

Software Demo – University of Wisconsin System

Ryan created this video for the University of Wisconsin System. It is for a new library catalog system called Forward.  Forward is a web software system that improves upon the UW library catalog.  The video was done primarily in After Effects with SoundBooth for the audio recording.

Quad City Motion

This project was a lot of fun.  We enjoy being able to flex our motion graphic chops any time we can.  The client had an immediate time frame so John worked over the weekend to get it finished.  This is an example of some of the complex motion techniques we use.  There is a video of a river partway through that is actually just an animated still photo.
